Gina Physic has over eight years of experience in consumer marketing, digital marketing, media relations, social media strategy, and public affairs. She has worked for global public relations firms, as well as in higher education and city government. Her career in communications grew from a concern with the ways that news media criminalize and perpetuate stereotypes of marginalized people through language and imagery. Now, she focuses on the liberatory value of storytelling, empowering people to share their stories to encourage paradigm shift and challenge existing systems.
Gina holds degrees in sociology and African American Studies from Grinnell College and Boston University. She is an alum of the Posse Foundation and a 2019 scholarship recipient of The Wing, where she pursued a storytelling project to create a space for formerly incarcerated women to share their stories.
While completing her M.A. at Boston University, Gina led a book club at a Massachusetts women’s prison and worked with a local non-profit, Haley House, to empower and provide resources to women and children impacted by mass incarceration. Upon completing her degree, Gina was a researcher for the Massachusetts Sentencing Commission, focusing on the ways that sentencing guidelines influence racial and gender disparities in sentencing. Prior to her time at Advancement Project National Office working on the national campaign for #PoliceFreeSchools, Gina was Assistant Director of Media Relations and Public Affairs for the City of Boston’s planning agency, where she advocated for communities of color impacted by the city’s housing crisis.
